TIME FOR THE NEXT STEP
Technical advisor
DNV, the international accredited registrar and classification society from Norway, acts as a technical advisor for RUG Ventures in order to do a claims verification for the Ocean Battery prototype as developed by Ocean Grazer. This verification yielded positive results, which means Ocean Grazer is now one step closer to bringing the Ocean Battery to the market.
Ocean Grazer
The Ocean Battery has been in development since 2014 at the University of Groningen. As of 2019, Ocean Grazer is turning knowledge into business opportunities. The company is currently led by CEO Frits Bliek and COO Max Duursma, two experienced professionals in the maritime and energy sector, together with CTO Marijn van Rooij, who spent 5 years on the Ocean Battery concept. Their current focus lies on the launch of the Ocean Battery.
Ocean Battery
The Ocean Battery is a scalable, modular system, placed on the bottom of the ocean near renewable energy sources such as wind turbines and solar farms. The system contains a reservoir filled with water placed on the seabed. In order to store energy, the Ocean Battery pumps water out of the reservoir, working against the pressure exerted by the sea. When there is demand for power, water flows back to the reservoirs, triggering multiple hydro turbines to generate electricity. The Ocean Battery is an efficient and sustainable way to store energy right at the production site. As no scarce materials are needed for the production of the battery, the system is ecologically sound, also forming a habitat on the ocean floor using its structure.
Test
Recently, the first live test phase of the Ocean Battery energy storage system was successfully completed. During the first phase, the battery prototype was launched in the Eemshaven Port, running multiple tests and delivering the first results. The positive test results green-light the start of the next phase, where a full-sized version of the Ocean Battery will be placed on the bottom of a flooded quarry. As the conditions resemble those on the bottom of the ocean, the system will only be tested in the actual sea if this phase turns out to be successful. The system will be certified and ready for operation in 2023.
